    @ mbokhari,
Please don\'t mind if I ask,
Are these book for free distribution?
Even if free, I would pray Allah grants me life for 200 years at least, to catch all this knowledge.

My frustration prompts me to sing:

    almoon bas kareen O yaar
    tenoon ikko alif darkar
    Good luck merey yaar!

The whole folder is around 660 mb. Total PITA to zip and upload. BTW, I have uploaded only about 184. Will be uploading more.

I especially recommend Proust, Hemingway, Rushdie, Samuel Butler and Tolstoy. You can download my files as well. Check the top bar for each book when you open a link.

    @Shikra

My ultimate goal is to finish and understand all the books in the Harvard Classics.

  7. Thanks dude.. (worth a try).. but I thought about it afterwards.. so many books are just ewwjjjj! if you are at somep point able to up the Foundation \"septilogy\" that\'d be awesome.. I haven\'t read the last two ..

Also, I\'ve been meaning to read Proust.. read some Hemingway long time ago.. and also tolstoy (War what is it good for -- excellent read but I stopped in the mddle) ... man those things are hideously long... I just gave up...

Zabardast collection all in all.. (I\'m looking to make the \"Islamic Classics\" collection but most are only available in arabic etc. -- though Javed Hashmi mentioned that he read Al-Tabari in Urdu .. gotta look for it next time I\'m there)

  8. @TK

    Foundation septlology uploaded.

I hope you have read The Sun Also Rises and For Whom The Bell Tolls...Brief, easy reading. And what literature! Stream of consciousness, small curt sentences...No wonder Hemingway won a Nobel.

In Samuel Butler, you should read The Way of All Flesh. One of the greatest small novels ever written. Of all the fiction I have ever read, this has \"stayed\" with me the most. Seriously, this novel was a masterpiece.

I agree about Tolstoy. It was a great read but I have forgotten quite a lot of it.

My drive behind collecting all those books is to have soft copies of all the books I have ever read. I wish I could find another classic, \"Ada or Ardor\" by Vladimir Nabokov. Its just that I am too cheap to dish out a couple of euros to get an ebook \';-) I just troll for freebies...

By the way, I have another great Urdu classic in pdf form. Mirza Hadi Ruswa\'s \"Umrao Jaan Ada\" in scanned format. The language is amazing. Old Lucknow spelling/imlaa. Great idiom. I saw the movie before I read the novel and I gotta say, the movie was quite faithful. The only problem with the pdf file was, its 106 MB...ouch...Let me see if I can upload it.

    taban_khamosh:
\'Master and Margarita\' is not by V. Nabokov, but by another great Russian, Mikhail Bulgakov, who was one of the earliest Magical Realists and also a guru to people like Rushdie. This book is a good one, a bit difficult though. I liked his \'Heart of a Dog\' as well. Something similar needs to be written with Pakistan and Pakistani society as the subject and/or background.

One of the many best sites that I very often refer to. Till date my collection amounts to more than 450Gb! Pkpilitics members should make extensive use of this site!

    junaid,

here is a little piece from fmk to enjoy his indepth response:

It is not about the muslim decline specifically/only, but the first few points below are in response to your thoughts above — you can choose to ignore this, as you have previously ignored my question ‘how do you define the sets (and find them mutually non-intersecting) of personal morals/justice and the societal ones’.

#1:”This dynamic is of paramount importance. You and I perhaps only agree on the historic paradigm of Muslim glory of the past, the same one the Islami zehen donkeys spend their miserable lives celebrating. Would you not agree that the golden age of Islam reached its apex under the dynamic I outlined above?”

No disagreement on that. However, the difference that the two of us have lies in what you take “religion” as void of, i.e., dynamism, thinking new ways, and modernizing with the ever-changing problems around us; while I take “deen” to be rather nurturing this and giving a purpose to all of it, to the point that one does not care about his or her own self any more. I will labor this point further below. But in summary, we are on the same page here as regards the apex point, and the lack of dynamism now. I feel the pain, that the muslims did lose their strength of freedom: which I believe basically comes from tawheed! And lost the practice of “riding the horse of life”and rather sold themselves to the cheaper options. (The leaders in all spheres are important and we can go on what ours did.) The solution however is not to just rebel (or bring a creative minority) in any way, it has to be done in the right way.

#2: “The old Muslim scientists were religious scholars par excellence but they were scientists foremost. They did not let religion hinder their study of Indian mathematics or Greek philosophy….”

It is again the age-old “vocabulary issue”! What you put in your image of the word religion is different from what I have in it. You attribute most of the negatives that you probably have seen in people with beard, for example, to the religion itself. That is also eminent when you say religion is personal, and it should be set away from the society etc. But the problem could be in reading, not in the message: why do we assume that the guy who has a beard must be more upright, morally and ethically, than others? if it were the rule, this would be so easy for the cheaters. (Or may be that is in practice already!) Eventually, anything that comes with the label of religion becomes a piece of mockery or hatred because of this phenomenon. Ironically, most of the human beings do not have time to think and/or cannot challenge the commonly held views. Aaha… but that is what you want when you say “creative minority”! So we have gone full circle, and that hopefully clarifies things. Because otherwise, your definition of religion is off from that of mine, because of the constituency of the set. Otherwise, with my view of it, you cannot define religion which I use inside my house and shut down before I come out or do science. (I prefer the word “deen” to religion, for the same reason.)

#3: “That is the thought experiment I mentioned. Scientific atheism must exist and must be tolerated in society for it to progress. Not everyone needs to disavow God, but whoever does not believe, whoever has the himmat-e-kufr, must be tolerated….”

How do you justify that? A certain set of beliefs (and hence the behavior) is good for ’some’ but not for ‘all’? Or some must do that, but not everyone? As an individual, mbokhari or fmk, I would rather care what is the truth and want to find that out and live my life based on that. But I am not going to sacrifice my life or for that matter the life of my son or daughter who are directly in my circle of influence (for some time at least) by believing in something that ain’t making sense, just for the larger society. It does not satisfy reason? Who will choose the members of the set, how and how often? The difference of opinion about the truth will lead to N different sets of beliefs in practice at any given time, but that is a natural outcome, some intra- and inter-set dynamics, dialogue will go on.

That hits actually a fundamental difference of thinking here: as an individual, I need to know if there’s a code of conduct that tells me how to live this life, any sense of good and bad, (and there comes the question of life after death, accountability— or whether time and space are finite?), and for that matter, it does not matter to me where the overall humanity will be after a thousand years from now. Similarly, I need to rely on the knowledge that is available now, it does not matter to me what will be known in the next century or where the larger body of knowledge stands then. To me, that is useless and I can’t bet my life on that.

    #4:
As for the tolerance, that should be there at any cost, in all circumstances, whether it is you model or mine. But the fundamental difference is that I want justice and truth to be the primary objective and hence set the equilibrium whereas your objective function is the development of the world, or saving from decline. I find this as a derivative of the objective of justice and truth, and I do not want to force any other outcomes on the system — the forces will balance out and lead to equilibrium, be its economy, climate, traffic light or wars between the powers of the world over water, oil, greener pastures.

    #5:
The second fundamental point is whether there is any accountability of what I do in this lifetime or no? I personally find it extremely unfair, and hard to reconcile that any crimes I do here to make someone’s life miserable are going to be washed out, and I am not going to be held accountable. In the vast spectrum of people with different levels of suffering and pain, where the generations end up in the same hole there forefather were, or someone born with less capabilities or more needs than others, the game of life is much harder. I do not find this world to be livable if there is no accountability after death. And if there is, it adds another force to the system which is so powerful and this world also starts behaving better. The concept of justice afterward also brings us closer to justice in this world. That is a key to deciphering the code of conduct.

As I said before, if there is anything that you do not want to discuss (because it is your personal matter), I am fine with it and excuse me for writing on that.
